چکیده
This paper provides an outline of history of hydro-technologies in the west and the east. It is an overview of the special issue on “the evolution of hydro-technologies globally”, in which the key topics regarding the history of water and sanitation worldwide, and its importance to future cities are presented and discussed. It covers a wide range of relevant historical issues, and is presented in three categories: productivity assessment, institutional framework and mechanisms, and governance aspects. This paper concludes by discussing the challenges on future research in this field of study.

Modelling the urban water cycle
Current urban water management practices aim to remove stormwater and wastewater efficiently from urban areas. An alternative approach is to consider stormwater and wastewater as a potential resource substitute for a portion of the water imported via the reticulated supply system. A holistic view of urban water resources provides the framework for the evaluation of the demand for water supply, ...
متن کاملSanitation safety planning as a tool for achieving safely managed sanitation systems and safe use of wastewater.
Increasing water stress and growing urbanization force a greater number of people to use wastewater as an alternative water supply, especially for irrigation. Although wastewater irrigation in agriculture has a long history and substantial benefits, without adequate treatment and protective measures on farms and in markets, use of wastewater poses risks to human health and the environment. Agai...

Introduction Bad water, sanitation and personal hygiene combined are after malnutrition globally considered as the major treats to human health. According to Michaud et al (2001) malnutrition accounted for nearly 6 million deaths (11.7% overall) and 220 million DALYs (15.9% overall) and the corresponding figures for poor water supply, sanitation, and personal hygiene accounted for 2.6 million d...
متن کاملThe effect of coupling coagulation and flocculation with membrane filtration in water treatment: a review.
Water supply and sanitation demands are foreseen to face enormous challenges over the coming decades to meet the fast growing needs in a global perspective. Significant growth in the industry is predicted and membrane separation technologies have been identified as one of the possible solutions to meet future demands. Application and implementation of membrane technology is expected both in pro...
متن کاملDevelopment and application of a systematic approach for prioritising the risk of failure of stormwater control strategies within selected SWITCH demonstration cities
A key objective of SWITCH is to support Learning Alliances (LAs) in the development of integrated urban water management strategies. Theme 2 of the SWITCH project is focused around sustainable stormwater management and its interactions with other sectors of the urban water cycle (e.g. water supply, eco-sanitation and urban agriculture) with a particular emphasis on achieving a paradigm shift wh...
